Pumpkin: Nature’s Powerhouse

Thursday, October 24th, 2013 by Shelby Lee

Finally, it’s that time of the year again: Crisp morning air, cozy sweaters, deep fall colors and of course, pumpkin flavored everything! Although pumpkins are ideal for carving jack-o-lanterns, making pie and house decoration, there are many health benefits you could be missing out on simply because you didn’t know! So, set down the Pumpkin Spice Latte and keep reading because I am about to drop some knowledge and improve your health one pumpkin at a time. 😉

1d1e5345682d232eafc55bbec642c6b7Begin your new relationship with pumpkins by never again throwing the pulp away. Pumpkins are a great vegetable with a lot of nutritional value. This low-calorie food offers lots of vitamins including A, B6, C,E and Magnesium. Magnesium prevents abnormal blood clotting, as well as helps strengthen the formation of your teeth, bones and the formation of your heart . Pumpkin also strengthens the immune system, helping to prevent colds, the flu, other types of infections and even may reduce the risk of cancer.

Don’t think you can get away with throwing away those pumpkin seeds either! When eaten raw, they provide essential nutrients for healthy skin and wound healing. Pumpkin seeds are among the few foods that increase in nutritional value as they decompose. Seeds stored for more than five months show a marked increase in protein content. They area the most alkaline forming seed and are high in zinc, which makes them a natural protector against osteoporosis. Also, pumpkin seeds contain good quality protein and area an excellent source of  Vitamin B.

Looking for a natural sleep aid? Eat pumpkin seeds. They contain the amino acid trytophan, which converts to serotonin, giving you a great nights sleep. Sweet dreams!

Is your sunscreen poisoning you?

Monday, August 12th, 2013 by Suzanne Nicholson

We all think we are being responsible by using sunscreen before we get in the sun, right?…Think again. Many brands lead you to believe that you are completely safeguarding your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. In reality, you may be exposing yourself to more risks by using certain chemical sunscreens. These chemicals are known to be endocrine disrupters, which adversely affects the normal functions of hormones in your body, and may also cause a variety of different cancer.

Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreen

There are two types of sunscreens, chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens quickly soak into the skin and find their way into the blood stream leaving toxins and free radicals in the body and can be detected in blood, urine and breast milk for at least two days. There are 17 individual sunscreen ingredients that are FDA approved: 15 of these are clear chemicals that absorb UV light and 2 are made of minerals that reflect UV light. The hormones most commonly disturbed are estrogen, progesterone and thyroid. These chemicals can cause abnormal development in fetuses and growing children. They can cause early puberty and early breast development in girls and undescended testicles in boys in addition to low sperm counts and infertility. Endocrine disruptors that act like estrogen can contribute to breast and ovarian cancers in women, and other endocrine disruptors may increase the chance of prostate cancer in men.

Physical sunscreens are primarily made up of minerals that sit on the surface of the skin and reflect and absorb UV light. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the two, active ingredients found in physical sunscreens. They are powerful barriers and won’t break down in the sun, works immediately (no waiting 20 minutes!) and body and environmentally friendly (non-toxic). Another benefit of a physical sunscreen is that it’s anti-bacterial and it also costs less! Click here for the best 50 SPF sunscreens that I recommend.

                             Chemicals to avoid

Oxybenzone (Worst), Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A), 4-MBC, Parabens (All), 3-BC, PABA (Para-aminobenzoic Acid), Octinoxate (Octyl-methoxycinnamate), Padimate O, Homosalate, Some fragrances, Octisalate, Octocrylene.

Help my DRY skin!

Monday, August 5th, 2013 by Lou Ann Shade

skinIntensive Hydrating Masque soothes and hydrates stressed and over exposed summer skin. This oil free masque is perfect for hydrating without that oily heavy feeling. With aloe, kelp and lavender, it will reduce redness while soothing and cooling the skin. Sodium hyaluronate retains moisture, up to 1000 times its own weight, delivering a big drink of water for you skin. It can be applied as a thick layer on throat and face, left on for 5 to 10 minutes. Also a favorite is to mix it with Replenishing Body Moisturizer, and use for an all over body moisturizer.

With the healing effects of the aloe,  Intensive Hydrating Masque can also be helpful for cancer patients undergoing radiation treatments. A thin layer applied after treatments and left on the skin over night can give relief. With Aveda products you can be sure of the purity, and quality of the ingredients. 7387099

Sunless Tanning: Everything you need to know…

Monday, July 22nd, 2013 by Suzanne Nicholson

What is a sunless tanner and how does it work? A combination of DHA, a colorless form of sugar, along with other sugar derived ingredients, reacts to the amino acids of your skin. Self-tanner pigments are only absorbed on the topmost layer of skin. Fading of the color is caused by the daily shedding of skin cells. The amount of DHA in the self-tanner along with the amino acids in your skin determines the shade.

Why use a sunless tanner?  There’s no need to waste time sunbathing and run the risk of skin cancer and prematurely aging skin when you can get a beautiful, healthy-looking tan in minutes. Another benefit from sunless tanning is that you instantly look slimmer. It also camouflages imperfections such as cellulite and veins and provides an even skin tone. Please keep in mind that sunless tanners do not contain sunscreens. I recommend using a zinc oxide-based, broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen daily. The sunscreens I do recommend can be found by going to

What do I need to do prior to getting a sunless tan? EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN!… Removing dead skin cells provides a smooth surface for the sunless tanning product to absorb evenly into your skin. It is best to wax or shave at least a day prior to your sunless tanner application. On the day of application do not use any body lotion, deodorant or fragrances, as it can cause discoloration. Wear loose, darker clothing to avoid staining.  Refrain from working out or getting wet within six hours of application. The longer you wait , the longer your tan will last and the richer the color will be.

What do I need to maintain my sunless tan? MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN!… Using moisturizing cleansers and lotions can help to prolong your sunless tan. Avoid taking long, hot showers and using loofas and body scrubs. Typically a sunless tan can last up to 7-10 days with proper preparation and maintenance.
