Spring 2015 Hair Trends

Friday, January 30th, 2015 by Shayna Barnette

With every New Year, come new trends to try out- and it seems that 2015 is all aboutlow key. This year’s trends focus on the approach of less is more (or to at least appear that way). The beauty of these trends is that they’re all as high/low maintenance as you like.

Boho Waves +Messy Braids

The great thing about this trend is that there’s literally nothing to it- anyone can achieve that luxurious look by just walking out of the house with undone “boho-chic”waves, or scrap your hair into a messy bun or braid and that’s you. It lacks pretention, and calls for just leave-in conditioner and/or dry shampooo!

The “LOB” (Long Bob)

The “lob” (long bob) is still going strong, with Kate Mara and Kerry Washington big fans of the trend. A low maintenance look that’s also subtly sexy, this style is flattering on anyone. Kate’s texturized layers give her cut great movement, while Kerry’s caramel highlights add depth to  her look.  Use your flat iron to achieve these beachy waves and enhance shine.

Half Up Top Knot

This. Look. Rocks. This is the ultimate cool-girl style right now, and works with just about any length. It’s also insanely easy to achieve- just make a cute knot and secure with an elastic tie. Pull a few pieces out to frame your face and you’re set.

The Man Bun + Undercuts + Waves

2014 was a great year for men’s hair. The topknot and undercuts gained a lot of traction, but 2015 is definitely their year. The man bun/topknot/samurai ponytail goes by many names but there’s an understated cool about it that makes a big statement. The undercut is great for men looking for something rugged and clean cut at the same time. Amazing on their own, something beautiful happens when you combine the two- you get a wonderfully cool cut with just enough relaxed edge.

Last but not least, wavy/messy hair is making its way onto the scene. Jared Leto captured our hearts with his long ombré locks, but simply going just a few inches shorter can make this a more approachable look for most.  This is about as low key as it gets, with little to no fuss involved.

A Must Read Book- Wine To Water: How one man saved himself while trying to save the world

Thursday, May 1st, 2014 by Shayna Barnette

If you are in the mood to read an inspiring book that proves it only takes one person to make a difference, then look no further. Wine To Water: How One Man Saved Himself While Trying To Save The World is  about how a 25 year old bartender, named Doc Hendley, was inspired to provide fresh drinking water to Sudan genocide victims.

It all began in Raleigh, NC in 2004. Doc hosted the first Wine To Water™ event, a wine tasting where proceeds supported  water projects around the world. Then with no experience at all, he risked his life to install  fresh water systems in Darfur, Sudan, where the government was wiping out entire villages and polluting water supplies by dumping their corpses into water sources.

After spending one year in Darfur, Sudan, Doc decided to continue growing his organization, which officially became a non-profit in 2007. Wine To Water™ helps provide clean drinking water to people around the world.

5 Tips for an Amazing Selfie

Thursday, February 13th, 2014 by Shayna Barnette

Selfie: A self-portrait, usually taken with a digital or phone camera.

Here are 5 easy tips to making your selfie look amazing:

oneThink Big

Apply the Hair Potion to your roots and rub it in.

Apply the Hair Potion to your roots and rub it in. Follow this up with some teasing if you’d like maximum volume that stays!

Add volume to your hair. Try flipping your head upside down or teasing your roots slightly. You can also sprinkle some of Aveda’s Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion at the roots for volume that lasts!

This is the correct angle to hold your camera with great natural lighting in front of me.

DO: Make your face appear slimmer by holding your device from above (think a 45º angle); tilt your chin down slightly; and turn your head slightly. Be sure to fully extend the arm that is holding the device.

The camera is being held too low here. This is great of you want to look like you have multiple chins or add weight to your appearance.

DON’T: Look straight at the camera or hold it lower than your face.

DO: Opt for natural and window lighting (like in a car). Also, facing the light source, so it hits you more on one side of your face if you can.

DON’T: Avoid bright lights behind you, also known as “backlighting” and florescent lighting.

DO: Be aware of your surroundings and do a once over on what is behind you, to avoid having things that should be avoided in your pic.

DON’T: Be oblivious to the person who is picking their nose or making out behind you.

This would be an example of a lighting and background DON'T. I have a completely unsuspecting photo bomber..Oops!

fiveUse a Filter

If your smart phone does not have a good photo editing tool, I recommend downloading Pixlr Express. You can also use this free editor on your computer by going to By using a filter you can make your pic look more eye catching. You can also create really cool collages with this program. Did I mention it is free?

As you gave the gift of AVEDA this holiday season you gave so much more! See how AVEDA is helping to improve lives in Nepal.

ANSAB_NRM_REDD_Measuring-DBH-in-a-CFUG-of-chitwan Aveda returned to Nepal for the 6th year, continuing to build our long-term partnership with the paper making communities.

The tradition of paper making is a sustainable practice where lokta bark, from the lokta shrub,  is collected with a machete, always leaving enough to regenerate new growth. The bark is then beaten into a pulp, dried into sheets of paper and died with nontoxic die.

When you touch the beautiful paper on Aveda gift sets you’re feeling much more than the natural, handmade texture. You’re feeling the joy of lives changed for the better. Income from paper making in Nepal helps more than 4,900 people support their families and communities. Many of the workers are women who use the income to send their children to school and buy medicine for the elderly.

In the Mountains, women have to walk 1-1/2 hours daily to collect water from polluted sources. In the last decade, Aveda has partnered with Global Green-grants to fund new water projects. Local communities now have new water tanks, pipes and taps. As a result, 450 families now have clean, safe drinking water, and 34,000 acres of forest is protected.

So, we thank you for purchasing one of the beautiful Aveda gift sets this holiday season, and remember that you didn’t just give any gift. You’re gave the Gift Of Love!  And, as we enter the New Year, remember that we have custom gift sets available for birthdays, as well as upcoming holidays like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.  Come back and see us soon!

5 Tips On How To Reduce Stress During The Holidays

Thursday, December 26th, 2013 by Marqui Linden

The holidays are most everyone’s favorite time of the year. Feeling thankful, festive, and sitting by a warm fire surrounded by your loved ones. But let’s be real, that’s not always the case. As enjoyable as this time of year is, it can also be very stressful! Trying to make it to everyone’s parties, seeing all sides of the family, to make everyone happy. It’s basically impossible! Being the child of divorced parents, I know exactly how difficult it can be to make things fair during this busy season. Although in the end, be thankful. Not everyone is lucky enough to be so in demand for the holidays. 🙂

Here is a few essential tips on how to juggle stress of the holidays!

1. Don’t stress about being fair… everyone has a different relationship with certain family members. Make each situation as equal as possible. But when it all comes down to it, you have the power to choose who you want to spend that special time with.

2. Consider bringing everyone together… we all know this may not always work or be the best idea. Although if it is at all possible to have everyone in one place at the same time, this will definitely cut back on some unwanted stress. That way you don’t feel like you have to cut your time short with someone to rush over to the next gift opening session.

3. Be real about your finances… money is another prominent source of stress at this time of the year. Do with what you can and what is realistic for you and your pocket book. Just be honest with loved ones if money is an issue. It truly is the thought that counts.

4. Avoid disputes… even if you have that weird uncle or a annoying cousin, just take a deep breath and remember that you want to celebrate the holidays in good spirits. Don’t let even one negative comment ruin that!

5. Try to relax and count your blessings… stop worrying and make the most of it! Embrace the times and welcome all connections with your loved ones. Remember the ones that are no longer with us and enjoy this amazing time of the year with the people you love.

Happy Holidays!

Talia Castellano: Cancer patient..Make-up Guru..Inspiration!

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 by Shayna Barnette Talia Joy Castellano was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and leukemia 6 years ago, at the age of 7.  After being diagnosed with cancer, Talia’s mother took her to visit a friend of the family, named Tammy, who was a cancer survivor. Her mother thought it would be good for them to talk about Talia’s recent diagnosis. During this visit, Tammy showed Talia her makeup collection. This began Talia’s fascination with make-up, leading to her begin a video blog on YouTube. Her YouTube channel, “TaliaJoy18”, featured not only make-up tutorials, but also her journey with cancer. She found this to be a great way to inspire other people with cancer as well as share her love of makeup.

In August 2012, Talia’s released a “Bad News” video blog letting her viewers know her cancer had progressed and could now be found in her bone marrow. This news prompted documentary filmmakers, who had previously talked to Talia, to release a video to help make her dream of doing Ellen Degeneres’ makeup come true. The filmmakers encouraged people to post this video on Ellen’s Facebook page, website, and to Tweet the Ellen Show.

Talia’s dream came true in September 2012, when she appeared on the Ellen show. When Ellen asked Talia how she stays so positive her response referred to the movie Finding Nemo when Ellen’s character, Dory, encourages others to

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.”

During the show, Cover Girl presented Talia with a check for $20,000 and made her an honorary Cover Girl. Then in January, during a Skype appearance on the Ellen show, Ellen presented Talia with the opportunity to film make-up tutorials for Cover Girl. These tutorials were featured on both Ellen and Cover Girl’s YouTube channels.

Talia uploaded her last YouTube video titled “CancerVlog: 4 weeks in the hospital!!” on May 23, 2013. In this video she mentioned that she was currently undergoing treatment to maintain the pain, rather than cure her illness. She mentioned she was not feeling like her usual self and was suffering from depression and anxiety. She managed to stay optimistic saying

“ Hopefully once I get out of the hospital, my room will be all done and I’ll have my life kind of on track.”

On July 16, 2013 Talia lost her battle with cancer. A post appeared on her Facebook page announcing the young girls death.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share with all of you that Talia has earned her wings at 11:22am. Please lift her beautiful soul, her beautiful light to heaven and please send your love and prayers to her family during this most difficult time. God speed little one, may you be free from pain and suffering, may your soul feel the light and love that you brought to so many of us on this Earth during the short time you were her with us. We will miss you more than you will ever know baby girl.”

Talia was an inspiration to many and a truly brave girl. Even at a young age, she did not let her illness stop her from achieving her dreams or making the best of her situation. Her positive attitude and bubbly personality was infectious and she is missed by many.
