Spring 2015 Hair Trends

Friday, January 30th, 2015 by Shayna Barnette

With every New Year, come new trends to try out- and it seems that 2015 is all aboutlow key. This year’s trends focus on the approach of less is more (or to at least appear that way). The beauty of these trends is that they’re all as high/low maintenance as you like.

Boho Waves +Messy Braids

The great thing about this trend is that there’s literally nothing to it- anyone can achieve that luxurious look by just walking out of the house with undone “boho-chic”waves, or scrap your hair into a messy bun or braid and that’s you. It lacks pretention, and calls for just leave-in conditioner and/or dry shampooo!

The “LOB” (Long Bob)

The “lob” (long bob) is still going strong, with Kate Mara and Kerry Washington big fans of the trend. A low maintenance look that’s also subtly sexy, this style is flattering on anyone. Kate’s texturized layers give her cut great movement, while Kerry’s caramel highlights add depth to  her look.  Use your flat iron to achieve these beachy waves and enhance shine.

Half Up Top Knot

This. Look. Rocks. This is the ultimate cool-girl style right now, and works with just about any length. It’s also insanely easy to achieve- just make a cute knot and secure with an elastic tie. Pull a few pieces out to frame your face and you’re set.

The Man Bun + Undercuts + Waves

2014 was a great year for men’s hair. The topknot and undercuts gained a lot of traction, but 2015 is definitely their year. The man bun/topknot/samurai ponytail goes by many names but there’s an understated cool about it that makes a big statement. The undercut is great for men looking for something rugged and clean cut at the same time. Amazing on their own, something beautiful happens when you combine the two- you get a wonderfully cool cut with just enough relaxed edge.

Last but not least, wavy/messy hair is making its way onto the scene. Jared Leto captured our hearts with his long ombré locks, but simply going just a few inches shorter can make this a more approachable look for most.  This is about as low key as it gets, with little to no fuss involved.

Fall 2013 Hair Color Trends

Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 by Ashley Slaats

It’s fall! My favorite time of year! I love to watch the leaves change to fabulous shades of yellow, orange and red. Why not take inspiration from the changing of the leaves to transform your hair color this season? No matter what shade your hair is, make it richer. This fall, keep it “natural” by choosing rich colors that are within a shade or two of your natural color. Keep it dimensional with shades that are within a level or two darker or lighter of each other. Here are some blondes, brunettes and reds that we are loving this season.

Honey Blondes

Warm blonde hues with lighter blonde high lights

Bronde (Brown plus Blonde)

These shades can have ashy or golden undertones. Stay lighter through the face and ends for a subtle ombre effect

Chocolate Caramel

Chocolate brown paired with copper high lights through miss and ends

Cherry Cola

Reds with hues of violet

White After Labor Day… Fuax Pas or a Must?

Monday, September 9th, 2013 by Shayna Barnette

36192b51504c53061fe09b22847973d4Labor Day, the traditional end to the summer season. But wait…Can I still wear white? The answer is YES! Remember that the transition into fall fashion is less about the colors you wear and more about the fabric. As the temperatures get cooler pack away your linen and other light fabrics, instead opting for more weather appropriate pieces such as cashmere, wool, and heavier cotton. Pair your fall and winter white’s with solid colors such as navy, black, camel, cream, and denim.

Where did this rule originate? In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s the wealthy would trade in their dark clothing for shades of white during the summer, to show their social status. Labor Day signified the end of summer and the return to work, where they would go back to wearing their usual dark colors.  This ended as the middle class arose, post depression era, making everyone able to afford white.  Now it was worn simply to keep cool during the hot temperatures. Long ago even Emily Post, an American author on etiquette who wrote for fashion magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, agreed this rule no longer applies.

“Of course you can wear white after Labor Day, and it makes perfect sense to do so in climates where September’s temperatures are hardly fall-like…Wear what’s appropriate- for the weather, the season, or the occasion.” Emily Post

Check out a few of the white collections on the Fall 2013 runways

Celebrities do it….

Men can do it too!

So throw out the seriously out dated notion that white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas and embrace white this season!!

Ah, the changing color of the trees, the brisk morning air, and amazing scents of apple, cinnamon and pumpkin fill the air. That’s right, fall is quickly approaching!
