Professional vs. Over the Counter Hair Care Products

Monday, July 29th, 2013 by Shayna Barnette

You can’t help but notice an abundance of inexpensive hair care products to choose from when you visit a convenience store. You think to yourself, “Why wait to get my products from my local hair salon when I can get it here now and at a fraction of the cost?”

What’s the difference between the two?

Although it may appear that you are saving money, in the long run you are not. Salon products are far more concentrated than over the counter products, meaning you use less and it lasts longer. In addition to this, the harsh cleansers found in over the counter products, such as Ammonium Laurel Sulfate, will dry out and damage your hair, causing split ends and possible breakage. Another benefit to using salon products is the higher quality of ingredients and levels of proteins and vitamins it contains.

It is important to be aware that salon brand products you may find in convenience stores might be FAKE, DILUTED or OLD.  These professional product companies are going through many measures to figure out how their products are ending up on the shelves of these convenience stores in order to stop it. Your hair stylist is trained on the products they offer in order to recommend the best ones for you as an individual, which is why they are only guaranteed when purchased from a salon. Plus by getting your products at your local salon you are helping to support them, being that product sales are immensely vital to the success of a salon.

Going with a professional brand? Here’s an added benefit you will get from using AVEDA…

“AVEDA is healthy for you, your hair and the environment. If your hair is chemically treated, the aroma and holistic value of the herbs and natural oils in our products help to keep the integrity of your hair and sooth your senses. All AVEDA products complete a daily ritual to stimulate your mind, body and spirit. Mixing the use of our products with over the counter products weakens the effectiveness in which that particular product is intended for and destroys the over all mission of AVEDA.” Charlotte Donnan, Senior Hair Designer at The Artistic Salon

Sunless Tanning: Everything you need to know…

What is a sunless tanner and how does it work? A combination of DHA, a colorless form of sugar, along with other sugar derived ingredients, reacts to the amino acids of your skin. Self-tanner pigments are only absorbed on the topmost layer of skin. Fading of the color is caused by the daily shedding of skin cells. The amount of DHA in the self-tanner along with the amino acids in your skin determines the shade.

Why use a sunless tanner?  There’s no need to waste time sunbathing and run the risk of skin cancer and prematurely aging skin when you can get a beautiful, healthy-looking tan in minutes. Another benefit from sunless tanning is that you instantly look slimmer. It also camouflages imperfections such as cellulite and veins and provides an even skin tone. Please keep in mind that sunless tanners do not contain sunscreens. I recommend using a zinc oxide-based, broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen daily. The sunscreens I do recommend can be found by going to http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/browse/sunscreen

What do I need to do prior to getting a sunless tan? EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN!… Removing dead skin cells provides a smooth surface for the sunless tanning product to absorb evenly into your skin. It is best to wax or shave at least a day prior to your sunless tanner application. On the day of application do not use any body lotion, deodorant or fragrances, as it can cause discoloration. Wear loose, darker clothing to avoid staining.  Refrain from working out or getting wet within six hours of application. The longer you wait , the longer your tan will last and the richer the color will be.

What do I need to maintain my sunless tan? MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN!… Using moisturizing cleansers and lotions can help to prolong your sunless tan. Avoid taking long, hot showers and using loofas and body scrubs. Typically a sunless tan can last up to 7-10 days with proper preparation and maintenance.

Aveda’s Demi-Permanent vs. Permanent Hair Color

Monday, July 15th, 2013 by Vanessa Parette

ST131150_R2_crop_Lores Looking for a hair color that is made up of  99% naturally derived ingredients, that is also cruelty free to animals and eco friendly? Aveda’s hair color is formulated without parabens and petrochemicals, instead utilizing botanicals such as sunflower, castor and jojoba oils. To achieve brilliant shine, Aveda also uses organic Babassu oil from Brazil. The botanical ingredients found within Aveda’s hair color can actually improve the condition of your hair. Also, natural antioxidants formulated within Aveda’s hair color help to protect your hair from harmful UV rays.  “Customized color with a conscience” is a motto Aveda holds highly.  Testing is always done on people-never animals and product cartons are made from 100% recycled fiber. 2051-001_PETA_sign_Hires

Demi-Permanent or Permanent? Permanent hair color is exactly as it sounds-it is permanent. It penetrates the inner most layer of the hair, meaning the color stays until cut off. Gradually the artificial color will fade, however Aveda’s hair color fades on tone. For example, if you choose a beautiful shade of red, over time you will fade to a lighter red, rather than to a brown. If complete gray coverage is your goal, then permanent hair color is the best option.

Aveda’s Demi Permanent hair color will give you all the same benefits as the permanent hair color, only without the commitment. The artificial hair color will fade out more quickly than the permanent, allowing for a less noticeable outgrowth. Keep in mind that demi-permanent hair color does not have the ability to lighten, therefore the result may be a more subtle color change. Demi-permanent color is perfect for someone who wants to blend their gray, rather than have complete coverage, or who wants a subtle color change without the commitment of regular maintenance.

Craving pizza, a cold one, and an atmosphere?

Monday, July 8th, 2013 by Shayna Barnette

25728_386694294003_1338387_nIf you are looking for AMAZING pizza, with an atmosphere to match, try Old Town Pizza, located in Old Town Auburn. As you walk down the short stairs to the entrance, you may notice to your left a creative attraction containing an animatronic dog and gold minor who snore, adding to the overall historic feel that old town has to offer. When you walk in the door, you will immediately notice the cozy feel of the brick walls, low ceiling, rustic decor and countless old fashioned photographs covering the walls, not to mention the mouth watering smell of the pizza!

auburn-beerThirsty?…Old Town Pizza offers pitchers of soda for $2.25 per 5 people with complimentary refills. For wine lovers, they offer local winery options, as well as Salmon Creek and Tiziano, or bring your own bottle for a $10 corkage fee. For the traditional “pizza & beer” goers, their beer tap offers Coors Light, New Belgium Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Blue Moon Belgian White and a few others. Bottled beer is also offered here.

Hungry?…Start off with their impressive small salad, where there is no skimping on toppings. Don’t let the “small” fool you, this salad can be shared between about 4 adults. I also recommend trying their breadsticks, stuffed with mozzarella cheese and topped with a sprinkling of parmesan; ranch and marinara on the side, of course. 😉 I am definitely guilty of stopping gunfighterspestoin here during happy hour, solely for the breadsticks and beer! When it comes to pizza, the pepperoni is perfection, but if you are looking to step outside of the box definitely try the Gunfighter’s Pesto, made with pesto sauce, slices of tomato, garlic, basil and chunks of feta cheese. Oh, my goodness, this pizza is divine! My little secret is to get the garlic sauce in place of the pesto, but that is just my preference. If you are like me and can’t decide on just one type of pizza to get, they allow you to get the “half and half” option.

Enjoy!!
